A Step by Step Guide to Modifying a Honda Civic Engine

August 18th, 2010 · No Comments

Modifying your Honda Civic engine to gain more horsepower is a common and easy thing to do. Luckily for you there are thousands of people who have already done this so you can simply copy what they have done or alternatively build on what they have done to gain even more horsepower. Remember that no parts combination is the absolute best, there is always room for improvement.

To begin with the basics of making more horsepower from your Honda Civic, regardless of what engine it has, is to increase its breathing capacity. Remember that an engine is essentially a big air pump so making it work more efficiently will increase its horsepower and torque. Air enters the engine through the intake system, so this needs to be upgraded to yield maximum results. On the other side of the engine is where air exits, commonly known as the exhaust system. Once again the stock system is not very efficient and large gains can be had by installing an aftermarket exhaust and header. Finally an aftermarket ECU will ensure the engine adapts to these changes.

Intake

There are many different types of intake but the best one to go for is a Cold Air Intake. This type of system draws in cold air from inside of the front bumper bar which ensures there is always a steady supply of fresh air to the engine maximizing power. The problem with short ram type systems is that hot air is drawn in from the engine bay which results in a loss of power.

Header

This is the first part of your exhaust system from the engine side. It is where the exhaust gasses exit from the engine out of each of the cylinders (usually four in the case of a Honda) and merge into one pipe. Choosing the right header is important as it affects power delivery. A 4-2-1 style header will give excellent midrange power but will not provide any increase at the top end. A 4-1 style header will produce lots of top end power but possibly at the expensive of low end power, and therefore drivability.

Exhaust

Bigger exhaust piping will make more horsepower 90% of the time. Some people say that naturally aspirated engines need backpressure but this is just a myth. A large exhaust will however be quite loud so consider this when choosing which one to purchase. Generally speaking any aftermarket exhaust is an upgrade and will gain you more horsepower.

ECU

To maximize your horsepower after installing these new modifications you will need to install, and get tuned an aftermarket ECU. An ECU is the computer which controls all functions of your car and engine. A properly tuned ECU will see your Honda gain about 10% in peak horsepower.

In conclusion modifying your Honda Civic Engine is usually a rewarding experience as there are large horsepower gains to be found. Remember though to do things the right way first and if in doubt contact a professional.
