If you were given £10,000 to buy a new car, what would you choose? I did a quick straw poll in my office, asking this very same question to everyone I work with. The result was almost unanimous; the new Ford Fiesta. I, with some degree of assuredness, would disagree with this choice entirely. Ok, I have to admit that if you had asked me what I would buy a week ago I probably would have said the Ford Fiesta as well, but last weekend I test drove the brand new Honda Jazz and may I say that it was a complete revelation!
The first thing I noticed was obviously the looks. I admit that the brand new Ford Fiesta does look absolutely fabulous, especially compared to the vast majority of superminis on the market, who all seem to be vying for the same “bubble-car” look. The Honda looks even better than the Fiesta, adopting a much more mature, sportier look that leaves most of the competition looking like cars designed by children.
The driving experience of the Honda Jazz is similarly impressive; providing an uncharacteristically smooth drive for a vehicle in this price range. The 1.4 Litre engine was incredibly peppy and rivals Ford for the most reliable and enjoyable engines within the supermini price bracket.
The final aspect of the Honda Jazz that completely took me by excited surprise was the fantastic handling. You could probably turn on a sixpence in this vehicle. I tested it on the country roads near where I live and was able to take all the perilous bends at speeds that would have seen most of the Honda Jazz’s competition spinning off into a ditch.
The Honda Jazz is hugely impressive and an all too perfect solution to the supermini question. I recommend the unequivocally. As most people are buying the new Ford Fiesta, you will also retain a good deal of individuality by purchasing the Honda Jazz as well.
