The Advantages of Having an Aftermarket Honda Civic Air Intake

June 30th, 2010 · No Comments

A cold air intake or aftermarket intake is just the perfect upgrade if you are looking for an extra kick out of the engine. It is a fact that cold air contains more oxygen per unit volume than normal air. An aftermarket intake takes advantage of this allowing the engine to perform even better. It lowers the temperature of air going into the engine’s combustion chamber, hence increasing the power output and efficiency. The stock Civic air intake system restricts the engine’s capacity and is designed to reduce noise. Replacing the stock system with an aftermarket air filter has numerous benefits at the cost of slightly increased noise, which is a tradeoff most are willing to take.

Aftermarket Civic air intakes replace the stock systems with a setup of cylindrical tubing with a cone shaped filter at the end. A heat shield separates the air filter from rest of the engine compartment, allowing only cold air to be sucked in. Because there is more oxygen content in the cold air, it brings about efficient burning of fuel and increases the overall horsepower. This upgrade can give the car a gain of an extra 15 horsepower. Another advantage is an increase in the engine block life which comes as no surprise, as cooler air tends to keep the engine at relatively lower temperatures. This also means longer life span of other auxiliary units like the radiator. Also, the cold oxygen-rich air provides a better air-fuel mixture reducing burning losses. This improves the mileage of vehicle, saving a load of money in the long run. Installing an aftermarket air intake also gives the driver better acceleration.

In the case of stock air intakes, warm air is sent into the combustion chamber which produces a slow response to the drivers input. When the new intake is installed, it sends cold air in producing better air-fuel mixture. This mixture releases more energy per stroke, giving a faster throttle response. When used with other upgrades like special exhausts and chips, the overall performance if car is greatly improved. Other than the technical advantages, aftermarket Civic air intakes produce a typical roaring sound like many racing cars and at the same time gives a visually appealing look to engine bay area. So next time a car pulls up next to you at a red light, just tap the gas to unleash the awesome sound!
